Since its launch in December of 2015, Opened Palm has operated as a social enterprise, with the aim of plugging the gaps in our educational system that exist between the academic progression of Black, state-school educated pupils and their white counterparts. We do this through the running of bespoke educational and life-skills workshops and the mentoring of each and every one of our young people through the Oxford and Cambridge university application process.
Our Founder; Esther Odejimi (24), studied her undergraduate degree in Theology and Religion at Oxford University, Pembroke College between 2014 and 2017. She launched Opened Palm in her second year of study and the company has celebrated big successes ever since. As an organisation, we have directly worked with no less that 100 pupils over the years and have impacted the lives of many more. We celebrate a dynamic team of five, all of whom have attended Russell Group institutions. Our mission is to wake up in a world where economic disadvantage, heritage, family income or life experiences do not serve as negating factors in the futures of black children and young adults.
We are all too familiar with the ways in which many of us have been, (and continue to be), disenfranchised by the educational system. As a community, black people do not, in any way fall short with regards to intellect. This must be reflected in education and wider society. In the near future, (and funding permitting), we hope to expand our services to reach the Ivy League institutions across the pond. For now, watch this space!
