Melanin Medics is a UK-based registered charity which specializes in widening participation by promoting diversity in Medicine, widening aspirations and aiding career progression for African and Caribbean students and doctors. The organization has been focused to implement positive solutions which will help to overcome under-representation and remove socio-economic barriers in the medical profession. The organization is recognized and supported by The British Medical Association and General Medical Council.
They run a number of programmes, events, engagements, outreach, networking opportunities, workshops and mentorship in order to fulfil their mission. Founded in 2017, the focus of the organisation was to function as an online platform sharing both experiences and advice to African and Caribbean aspiring medics and medical students and showcasing positive representation of this particular demographic. However, having increased both their reach and capacity Melanin Medics desired for the organisation to have a greater impact on those who they are dedicated to serve as well as those who support and engage with their organisation. Melanin Medics recognised the need for a representative organisation which enables long-term support starting from pre-medical school entry right through to practising as a doctor leading to a generational impact.
African and Caribbean individuals face a number of challenges throughout their journeys into Medicine, through Medical Training and even while practising. Some of these challenges include the lack of representation in Medicine, disproportionate disciplinary action, racism and discrimination in the workplace, an attainment gap in higher education and scarcity of career guidance. Melanin Medics believe that African and Caribbean medics are most likely to thrive when their colleagues, employers and community understand their needs and educational institutions know how to support them to help them thrive in higher education. Melanin Medics tackles this through their activities and events which ensure that African and Caribbean doctors and medical students are well educated of their rights in the workplace and they are equipped with the knowledge and resources to successfully pursue a career in Medicine.
In 2019, Melanin Medics held 24 events and outreach sessions, reaching over 300 event attendees, 2,798 young people and supported by 148 volunteers. Over 90% of applicants assisted in the 2018/19 cohort received offers for medical school! As of currently, Melanin Medics is home to the UK’s largest intergenerational network for current and future African and Caribbean doctors. Melanin Medics currently has 3 Networks: Aspiring Medics, Medical Students and Doctors Network catering to each of their target demographics. The Networks exist to share experiences and opportunities, enable collaboration and to provide valuable resources. Through the Networks, Melanin Medics are able to connect with both current and future African and Caribbean doctors from all across the UK. Melanin Medics currently serves over 700 African and Caribbean members within their networks of aspiring medics, medical students and doctors in the UK. The Networks are a pivotal part of the organisation and the work which is carried out. All of the organisation’s volunteers come from the Networks as do the vast majority of event speakers. Through the organisation, Melanin Medics gives African Caribbean Medics the chance to give back to the younger generation and community. As an organization, Melanin Medics envisions a future where diversity in Medicine thrives and every individual is able to fulfil their maximum potential irrespective of their race or socioeconomic background.
