We believe that the medical profession should reflect the diverse society that it serves. This is why we set up ‘Leanne’s Amazing Medics’ – a medical outreach programme that aims to inspire, equip and increase the self-confidence of students who want to study medicine and who come from under-represented backgrounds.
Our fledgling pilot programme was launched in December 2016, which was also when Leanne Armitage and Daniel Huf, our co-founders, started working together and laying the groundwork for The Armitage Foundation.
In order to expand the programme and assess the impact it was having on students, we were awarded a research grant from St. George’s University of London. We focused our research on the effect the programme has on students’ attitudes, self-belief and self-confidence because our overall objective, to make students successful medical applicants, is a very long-term measure.
The research grant enabled us to expand the programme into 3 schools, and grow our team with Sheriffa Sanda-Bah, Simonette Carlton-Carew and Pooneh Zadeh joining as teaching coordinators. In the 2017-2018 academic school year we have reached over 30 students, and we plan to rapidly expand the number of schools to which we deliver our programmes in the upcoming years.
